Photo / iMovie Libraries on NAS drives

I had a fairly large (135Gb) Apple Photo library on my Synology NAS.

After upgrading my Mac to Sierra I had all sorts of permission warning and was unable to repair / open my library.

The official Apple Discussion forums were simply full of people whining / bitching with no solution…

However I can confirm the following works :

(I was connected via SMB)

Repair your permissions from Terminal :

sudo chown -R my_user_name ~/Volumes/your_NAS/path_to_your_library

sudo chmod -R 700 ~/Volumes/you_NAS/path_to_your_library

I then used Disk Utility to create a 200Gb Mac OS Extended Journaled (Apple Partition Map) Sparse Image on the NAS.

After mounting the partition I was able to copy the library over, repair it and hey presto it all works! (For the record I was not able to successfully copy the library over without repairing the permissions first.)

I’ve set the partition to automatically mount at Login.

The nice thing about doing this that other Apple applications that “don’t work on a NAS” like iMovie work perfectly well on a mounted image stored on the NAS.

In your face Apple – how can you expect users to be unable to store libraries like this on a NAS to begin with…

Expo

Preparing our media for the Hospitality Expo this week has made as realize just how many clients we have!

The above are just a small portion of venues / businesses we have provided solutions for just in the last year!

Are you being serviced?

Our service department seems to be growing and growing.

A steady flow of DJ equipment is keeping us busy – especially those cue buttons, Ethernet sockets and odd drink spill!

Everything’s Rosey

We’ve just put the finish touches to our installation in the rebuilt beer garden at the Rosemount Hotel.

The whole building has been switched over to a wireless zone control system with full speaker management.

Out the back we’ve installed weatherproof speakers that blend in seamlessly amongst the garden – we’ve even concealed the weatherproof subwoofers by mounting them underneath the timber decking!

PAL Mode on Samsung DVR Units (SRD-xxxx)

It’s funny what they leave out of some manuals.

In this case we looked at a DVR which the client couldn’t find the NTSC / PAL option in the system menu.

The reason for this is simple – it isn’t in the menus.

The selection is done on the mainboard in the rear left corner (when viewed from the front) and is marked – you’ll need to bring your own jumper though!

Tips

We’ve decided to add a new “tips” section to the site.

We come across some little gems every now and then that need to shine!

Generally Lafayette

This magic little gem sits in the old Perth Technical College (how appropriate for us!) in the Brookfield Plaza.

A combination of limited floor space and our spelunking skills saw us mount subwoofers centrally beneath the floor or built-in to the lounges for maximum effect and zero visual impact.

Weatherproof speakers in the plaza courtyard (concealed beneath the walkway overhang) gently float music to patrons seated outside and passersby alike while 4 point coverage in each room means people can easily talk over the even background music coverage.

Crown D-Class amplifiers have again been used for ultra-high efficiency / power with very little heat. Commercial WiFi repeaters have been added to the building to give mobile device control of the sound system (and Internet) from anywhere in the building.

A great team to work with!
