Our specialty prototyping project has stepped in to high gear. Obviously we can’t go in to the specifics here but needless to say it has involved the design and production of some pretty fancy test equipment. From creating easily editable OpenSCAD design files, creating new lower cost / more logical layouts, to machining key components from acrylic blocks, integrating the hardware components and then bench testing. Each time closer to a fully working beta destined for commercial testing. If we get the clearance for some photos we will upload them here…
Mt Clare
Massive works are underway at The Claremont. A massive tweak of the upstairs bar has included repairing / upgrading the PA system, servicing all amplifiers and controllers, cleaning and “neatening” all the existing lighting (and redoing the layout for maximum effect). The downstairs DJ box is back in the rear room and has been fulled serviced and pimped for 5 star quality (on both sides of the box). On the cards is the installation of the new Wi-Fi hot spot (run your office from the veranda with your laptop and a cold beer) and repairs to the veranda speaker system.
Prototype This
We really wish we could show you what we’re prototyping (on top of this pallet) but it’s going to be subject to a client patent so it’s a case of Non Disclosure. A shame really as it looks like an episode right out of MythBusters with hoses, fans, clamps, duct tape, gauges and a host of other gear bundled together! When it’s finished and in production we’ll revisit and show you what it is…
Ride the Lightning
What started out as a simple call for help for a phone system that wasn’t working soon turned in to a much bigger job.
It seems the early morning thunder storms over the Northern Suburbs brought with it a few million volts down the client’s phone lines. The PABX had been completely destroyed – the arrestors had literally been vapourized off the PCB. We were able to set up temporary diversions then set about replacing the PABX, handsets, patch panels, wall sockets and other components that had been damaged. The system was up and running overnight.
Are your phone lines protected against lightning? Do you have an alternative plan for when your phone / broadband goes down? Factotum Industries can supply you with a solution…
Radio Days
It seems the old radio on the boat wasn’t up to scratch (especially next to the new PA system!)
So we set about installing a new top-of-the-line head unit to the cabin (making good the previous gruesome cutout) as well as a high capacity 24v to 12v inverter and fitting pumping weather proof speaker boxes to the cabin, rear deck and fly bridge. On the way we cleaned up all orphaned wiring and even added a 12v lighter socket for phone chargers, GPS units and the like.
Lets hope we get to spend some time on the boat enjoying the hard work!
I’m On A Boat
The team at Evolution have got themselves a great big charter boat for deep sea fishing, pleasure cruises and big parties. And if you want a big party (read raft up) you need a big PA system!
Factotum Industries have supplied a complete turn-key system comprising of a silenced generator, robust high-efficiency speakers, “coffin” mounted DJ case and plug-and-play rack mounted control system with lockup storage. The system was fitted with custom mounts to fit it within the height constraints of the deck and features a lashing system to keep it secure during rough weather.

Organ Grinder
Today’s client brought us in a set of old organ recitals on analogue cassette tape. After importing we did some serious noise reduction and restoration and then edited the work in to CD length sessions before burning to disc. Quite a good recording given it was done with a domestic tape player with a built-in microphone and now our clients have the ease of playback on a CD player.
Black Box
It seems there’s been a lot of “black boxes” leaving the warehouse lately…
Sometimes we have clients that require advanced technical design / assembly skills and need turn key solutions. Many of these designs are built at our shop (as opposed to on-site) and then shipped unbadged direct so the clients can deploy to the final end users without the obvious signs of it being outsourced.
Plus it means we can indirectly service remote areas where we don’t have existing networks.
We’re here to lend a hand whatever you are doing!
You’ve Been Framed
Clients had a very heavy hardwood door. Poor weatherproofing and poor choice in original timber selection for the frame meant it [the frame] had completely failed.
We custom machined a new Jarrah frame, rehung the door and added additional sealing to keep the elements at bay.
VeeJay
The launch of a new night at local nightclub saw the promoter approach us with a design concept for an automated VJ (visual / video) performance. The specification was quite open allowing us to trawl for a wide array of footage. After much sourcing / transcoding / editing we loaded it up in to the VJ software and applied the necessary effects. We were even able to include promoter and sponsor watermarking and branding within the footage. Needless to say the client was absolutely wrapped with the final product. Hopefully we can upload a few snippets soon!
